The NLU Literacy Learning Lab serves as a hub for applied literacy learning, bringing together graduate preparation, K–12 literacy instruction, research, and school and community partnerships. Through its campus locations and online programming, the Lab provides opportunities for graduate students to develop as literacy professionals while supporting young learners. The Lab also provides professional development and consultation to schools and districts.
Celebrating over 50 Years of Literacy Teaching & Learning
Established in 1972, the NLU Literacy Learning Lab advances literacy learning and leadership through clinical preparation, professional learning, research, and community engagement. A hallmark of the Lab is its commitment to connecting research, theory, and practice while preparing knowledgeable and responsive literacy professionals.
At the heart of the Literacy Learning Lab is its clinical tutoring model, which provides graduate students in NLU’s Reading and Language Program with authentic, supervised experiences assessing and teaching children and adolescents. Through individualized, evidence-based literacy instruction, graduate students develop their expertise as literacy professionals while supporting the unique strengths and needs of each learner.
Beyond its clinical work, the Literacy Learning Lab extends its impact through school and community partnerships, professional development, research and publication, outreach, and literacy initiatives. In collaboration with Reading and Language Program faculty, school and district partners, alumni, and other literacy professionals, the Lab creates opportunities for continued professional learning and leadership in literacy locally, nationally, and internationally.
